Max May
He is a DMF Angel and earned his right to rest right after receiving his high school diploma. Max's symptoms began the last week of July 2020, just a few weeks after his 16th birthday. He had a constant extreme headache for about 9 days. His one day in the middle that he did not have a headache, he ran cross country in the morning, played basketball in the afternoon and played a baseball game in the evening. After the week of working with the pediatrician with migraine meds, and waiting for the insurance approval for an MRI, the doctor sent him to the emergency room to hopefully get an MRI and some relief for him. After some IV migraine meds in the ER, the MRI results came back about 11:00pm showing a mass in his brain about the size of a tennis ball.
He had his first surgery, August 4, 2020. The diagnosis was a high grade glioma (glioblastoma). He had his one and only seizure in June of 2021. An MRI in June showed new tumor growth, so he was scheduled for another surgery in July. They attempted a less invasive surgery on July 12th, but the tumor had grown more than expected, so he had to have another surgery on July 13th. He also began using an Optune device in September. This is a device worn on the scalp and attached to a battery pack that emits eletro waves to break up cancer cell division. The device is worn on average 18 hours a day.
In 2022, The MRI in July showed tumor change, so the immunotherapy was discontinued at that time. He kept using the Optune until August when he did 10 days more of proton therapy. In July, he began to have difficulty with his left hand and left leg. In October, he began a new chemotherapy medicine, Selinexor. He also began OT. Since his first surgery, he has had an MRI every 4-8 weeks. He did blood work every 2-6 weeks.
He was determined to continue to do the things he wanted to do - the best his body would allow him to.
